Adapt and Overcome.
That’s been my guiding principle on the mats and in life — and it’s the foundation of BJJ Fitness After 40.
My name is James Wilson and I started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at 36 with no grappling background, already carrying old injuries and the wear and tear of an athletic life. Like you, I felt the frustration of trying to keep up with younger, faster training partners, the fear of injuries that take forever to heal, and the harsh reality that my body just didn’t respond the way it used to.
But instead of giving up or trying to train like I was still in my 20s, I learned to adapt. I shifted my focus from pushing harder to training smarter — blending my decades of experience as a strength coach and athlete with a deep understanding of what it takes to thrive in BJJ as we age.
My journey includes over two decades as a fitness professional, coaching everyone from weekend warriors to world champions in mountain biking and helping BJJ athletes medal at No-Gi Worlds and Masters Worlds. I’ve created innovative training systems like the Atomic Strength Isometric Training System, and I’ve studied everything from kettlebells and maces to breathwork and movement therapy.
I’ve seen firsthand that it’s possible to build strength, durability, and confidence on the mats at any age — if you’re willing to be honest, take ownership, and adapt.
At BJJ Fitness After 40, my mission is simple: help you train in a way that makes you stronger and more capable now, while setting you up to enjoy BJJ for the rest of your life. Whether you want to keep up with the young guns at your gym, reduce injuries, or just feel like your best self every time you step on the mat, I’m here to guide you.
If you’re ready to embrace a smarter, more sustainable approach to training — from someone who's been in your shoes, made the mistakes, and now knows what it takes — you’ve found your place.
